A microchip is a permanent way to identify a pet if it is lost and doesn’t have a collar with tags. When a pet is found they can be scanned for a microchip and the owner located.

A microchip is about the size of a grain of rice that is sterile and is implanted under the skin with a large needle. Usually it is placed along the back just behind the neck and between the shoulder blades. It may move around a little until the body develops scar tissue around it. In some breeds you maybe able to feel the microchip under the skin and they are visible on radiographs.

The microchip is programed with a specific combination of numbers and/or letters. This code is associated with the manufacturer who then links your address and phone number to that code. If you move or change your phone number remember to update your information with the company! There are many cases of dogs or cats that are found with microchips but can’t be reunited with their owner due to outdated information.
